There are a lot of factors to consider before having your Secret Hair Extensions fitted. One of the most important questions we ask our clients during a consultation is; will hair extensions fit your lifestyle?

If you have a particularly active lifestyle, this can affect which method will be suited to you. This post will cover hair extensions in the gym and what you need to factor in before deciding to go ahead with a fitting.

Can I Wear Hair Extensions In The Gym?

In answer to this question, Yes! As long as your hair extensions have been fitted and placed throughout the hair correctly, there should be no issue with wearing fitted hair extensions in the gym.

What Are The Best Type Of Hair Extensions For A Gym Bunny?

While it is possible to wear hair extensions to the gym, some methods are much more functional than others.

The best and most discreet hair extensions suitable for a gym-goer are Micro Ring or Nano Ring Hair Extensions. These extensions are fitted using small copper rings which are clamped to your natural hair. Individual extensions are a lot more pliable than bulkier methods such as Weft or Tape Hair Extensions. Their pliability means that are much easier to pull back into ponytails, buns and so on.

The methods we would advise to avoid if you are a regular gym goer are Keratin Bonds, Tape Hair Extensions, Wefts, and Weaves.

Keratin Bonds and Tape Hair Extensions are somewhat sensitive to heat and moisture. If your scalp becomes hot and sweaty during vigorous exercise, you risk the substance keeping the extensions sticking to the hair; growing soft, disintegrating and even slipping out over time.

Weft and Weave Hair Extensions are slightly more bulky than individual strands. Extensions fitted using wefts can be hard to cover when tying back into a ponytail or bun. They can also feel a lot heavier and hot due to the lace weft against the scalp.

Clip In Hair Extensions are an option for the gym if you are self-conscious about the appearance of your hair. However, we would advise you to avoid wearing them in the gym if possible. Tying Clip In Hair Extensions into a Ponytail or Bun can put stress on the hair that the clips are attached to.

How Should I Wear My Hair Extensions To The Gym?

If you’re like me, I’m sure you don’t want to spend a great deal of time getting ready for the gym. Most of the time, I leave with my sweaty hair stuck to my face so I don’t want to spend a great deal of time perfecting the perfect updo!
However, the best styles for the gym, are the old faithful – Ponytails, Buns, and Plaits.
Try to avoid pulling hair into a tight style as this puts stress on your hair at the roots. Repetitive pressure can cause damage to your hair, it can be painful as well as cause your hair extensions to slip or even slide out over time.

We recommend wearing a swimming hat if visiting the swimming pool. Although you may not want to, you risk causing considerable chlorine damage and tangling if you do not. Hair Extensions receive no nutrients from the scalp, so damage is most often irreversible. Avoid any hurt to your extensions by wearing a swimming hat and washing hair with a conditioning treatment afterward.

After you have finished your work out, wash your hair immediately with a nourishing Hair Extensions Shampoo and Conditioner. I’m often running short on time in the morning, so I blow dry my hair thoroughly and use my trusty Dry Shampoo and Protein Spray to freshen up my hair. I then ensure I wash my hair extensions in the evening when I have more time to give them the attention they need.

If you have been swimming without a swimming hat, it is imperative that you wash your hair straight away before changing.

Other Factors To Consider If You Go To The Gym Often…

Repetitively pulling you hair extensions back into a ponytail will mean pulling on the extension ring. Over time your hair extensions may appear grown down and will need maintenance appointments more frequently than if you always wear your hair down. You could also lose a few strands between appointments.

You will have to wash your hair…a lot! To keep extensions fresh and soft you will need to rinse them regularly to rid them of sweat and dry shampoo. Washing and drying extensions is time-consuming, this is something you will need to factor into your schedule.

I love having a thick luscious ponytail for the gym, however, if you feel you cannot commit to looking after fitted extensions while keeping up a busy gym routine, Clip In and The Secret Hair Extensions Halo are a great alternative! Just put them in after you’re showered and you’re ready to go!
